Choosing the Most Suitable Network Topology​

There are five basic types of network topology:

Mesh Topology

In a mesh network, all devices are essentially connected to each other, meaning that if one node fails, your network won’t be affected. Mesh networks are often the most expensive option, but they’re ideal for large companies that want to minimise redundancy and maximise bandwidth speeds.

Star Topology

In a star network, all devices are connected to a central computer, but not to each other, meaning all data must pass through the central hub. On the one hand, this means one problematic device won’t harm your entire network, but a problem with the central computer could cause downtime.

Bus Topology

In this network, the bus refers to one cable, which every device in the network is connected to. One break in the main wire can cause problems, but bus networks are affordable and often suitable for small companies.

Ring Topology

In a ring network, there is no central hub; all nodes are connected in a closed loop, meaning each node is connected to two other nodes. Any data transferred passes through each node.

Tree Topology

Tree networks rely on a central hub. While a problem with the central hub can lead to network failures, tree networks are often useful for large organisations that need to create smaller, interconnected networks that are easy to manage.
