Fixing auskey access to ATO portal

Recently a number of clients have had issues accessing the ATO or other Australian government portals due to auskey not working.

When going to login to the ATO or other portal that uses auskey, only MyGov shows as an available credential instead of their personal auskey details

To resolve this follow the steps below to verify java and allow the auskey sites in the exception list:

• Open Internet Explorer – java and auskey only work through the old IE, not Firefox, chrome or Edge
• go to java.com and click on the link Do I have Java?
• Verify the java version and allow the java test to run.
• Make sure this works and you have the recommended Java installed. If not go back the previous screen to download and install java

Verified Java Version

• In windows 8/10 click on your start button and search java open Configure java
• In the Security tab the Security level should be set to High.
• Edit the Exception Site List add
  • https://authentication.business.gov.au
  • https://abr.gov.au
  • https://auskey.abr.gov.au
  • https://bp.ato.gov.au
• You may also need to add the specific portal address you are using if not in this list

• Click OK twice to save the settings and exit java configuration
• Now in IE open https://abr.gov.au/AUSkey/ and click the AUSkey Manager Login button on the right
• This will open https://authentication.business.gov.au.
• Confirm any java security prompts in the browser to Allow java to run.
• Check on Do not show this again for apps from the publisher and location above to prevent it prompting each time then Run

• Your credentials should now appear in the drop down list.
• If you still have an issue try restoring Advanced settings in IE, and Restore security prompts in security prompts in configure java security tab
