Windows 11 remote desktop stuck at Welcome screen after 24H2 update

A recent Windows update appears to have hobbled Remote desktop sessions with the remote computer being stuck and the cycling Welcome screen and not getting to the desktop

To workaround the issue follow these steps

  • open Local Group policy Editor (or on a domain join computer update Group policy from the active directory controller.
  • Go to > computer configuration > administrator templates > Windows components > remote desktop services > remote desktop session host > connections
  • Open Select network detection on the server
  • Enable and set the drop down to Turn off connect time detect and continuous network detect.
  • remote desktop session host > remote session environment
  • Set Enforce removal of remote desktop wallpaper to Enabled
